The southern flying squirrel is a small mammal species belonging to the order Rodentia and family Sciuridae. Known scientifically as Glaucomys volans, it is a nocturnal species found primarily in the southeastern regions of North America.
This arboreal creature has a distinct appearance with soft, grayish-brown fur covering its body, complemented by a creamy white underside. Its most distinguishing feature lies in its patagium, a flap of skin that extends between the forelimbs and hindlimbs, functioning as a gliding membrane. This enables the southern flying squirrel to glide effortlessly between trees, covering impressive distances of up to 150 feet while soaring through the air.
Primarily herbivorous, the southern flying squirrel feeds on a diverse range of nuts, seeds, acorns, bark, fruits, and fungi, exhibiting an adaptable diet depending on the season and availability of resources. Due to its nocturnal nature, these tiny mammals have large, prominent eyes and keen night vision to navigate their environment effectively.
Despite their name, southern flying squirrels are not restricted solely to the southern regions of North America. They can be found in a variety of forest habitats with suitable tree cover, extending from eastern Canada to parts of Florida and westward towards Texas. These sociable creatures typically live in small family groups in tree cavities or nests made from twigs, leaves, and moss.
Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, southern flying squirrels are subject to conservation concerns. However, their adaptable nature, unique gliding ability, and charming appearance have made them a subject of fascination among wildlife enthusiasts.
