NNC is primarily used for solving classification problems, where the task is to assign a class label to a given input based on the training dataset.
In NNC, the classification of a new input is determined by finding the nearest neighbors in the training dataset. The algorithm calculates the distance between the new input and all the instances in the training dataset using a distance metric, such as Euclidean distance or Manhattan distance. The nearest neighbors are typically identified using a k-nearest neighbors (KNN) approach, where k represents the number of closest neighbors to consider.
Once the nearest neighbors are identified, the majority class label among these neighbors is assigned to the new input. In case of a tie, additional techniques can be applied, such as considering weights based on distance or using a distance-weighted voting scheme.
The NNC algorithm is simple, computationally efficient, and has the advantage of adapting well to complex datasets with irregular decision boundaries. However, it may suffer from the curse of dimensionality when working with high-dimensional data, as the effectiveness of the distance metric decreases. Therefore, feature selection and dimensionality reduction techniques are often employed to improve its performance.
