Musculus vastus externus, also known as the vastus lateralis, is a Latin term referring to a specific muscle located in the thigh region of the human body. It is one of the four muscles that make up the quadriceps femoris muscle group.
The musculus vastus externus is categorized as an external muscle due to its position on the outer side of the thigh. It originates from the greater trochanter of the femur, which is a bony prominence on the upper part of the thigh bone, and attaches to the patella, or kneecap, through the quadriceps tendon. From there, the quadriceps tendon continues to the tibia, effectively encasing the patella and forming the patellar tendon.
This muscle plays a significant role in extending the knee joint, as well as in stabilizing and protecting the patella during movement. Along with the other muscles of the quadriceps femoris group, the musculus vastus externus is involved in activities such as walking, running, jumping, and squatting.
