Desmotomy is a medical procedure performed on animals, particularly horses, to sever or cut the connective tissue called a desmosome that holds two bones together. It is a surgical technique used to relieve tension and stiffness in the affected joint or to correct deformities and disorders that hinder normal movement.
The procedure is typically performed when other non-invasive treatments, such as medication or physical therapy, have failed to alleviate the condition. It involves making an incision into the skin and exposing the joint or ligaments in question. Using specialized surgical tools, the surgeon carefully cuts the desmosome, separating the two bones. This release of tension allows for improved joint flexibility and range of motion.
Desmotomy is commonly used for conditions such as contracted tendons, where the ligaments in the leg are too tight and impede normal leg extension. It may also be necessary to perform a desmotomy for disorders like "stringhalt," a neuromuscular condition that causes involuntary flexion of the hind limbs.
